The Sentencing of Changpeng Zhao (CZ)

The Sentencing of Changpeng Zhao (CZ)

This is correct. Changpeng Zhao, better known as "CZ", the founder and former CEO of Binance, was sentenced to four months in prison in April 2024.

1. Case Background (2024)

  • The Charge: Zhao pleaded guilty to a single count of failing to maintain an effective Anti-Money Laundering (AML) program at Binance, which constitutes a violation of the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act.

  • Case Details: Prosecutors argued that Binance allowed transactions linked to illegal activities—including terrorist financing and drug trafficking—to pass through due to lax oversight.

  • The Fines: As part of the settlement, Zhao agreed to pay a personal fine of $50 million, while Binance as a corporation agreed to record-breaking fines totaling $4.3 billion.

2. Subsequent Developments (2024 - 2025)

  • Serving the Sentence: Zhao began his sentence at a federal prison in California, was later moved to a halfway house, and was officially released on September 27, 2024.

  • Presidential Pardon (October 2025): In a surprise development last year, President Donald Trump issued a presidential pardon for Changpeng Zhao on October 23, 2025. The President described the prosecution as part of a "war on cryptocurrencies" led by the previous administration.

Current Status

Zhao is now free. While he is barred from managing Binance as part of the original settlement terms, he remains the majority shareholder of the company and continues to be one of the wealthiest figures in the global tech sector.
